Formula
SGPA = Σ(Ci × Gi) / ΣCi
Ci is the credit value of subject i. Gi is the grade point for subject i. F carries 0 points regardless of how close you were to passing. Σ means you add this up across every subject in the semester, including the failed one. ΣCi is the total credits for the semester, unchanged by a fail.

A failed subject still counts its full credits in ΣCi. It just contributes 0 to the top half of the formula, and that is what pulls the SGPA down.
Worked example
Student A takes five subjects: 4, 4, 3, 3 and 2 credits. Before the carry-over exam, the grades are A, B+, F, B and A, so the points are 9, 8, 0, 7 and 9.

Subject 3 failed, but its 3 credits still sit in the total. Add the last column: 36+32+0+21+18=107. Add the credits: 4+4+3+3+2=16. Divide: 107 ÷ 16 = 6.6875, which rounds to 6.69.
Student A’s SGPA before the carry-over exam is 6.69.
Student A then clears subject 3 in the carry-over exam and is awarded a C, worth 6 points. The other four subjects are unchanged.

Only subject 3’s row changed, from 0 to 18. Add the last column: 36+32+18+21+18=125. Divide: 125 ÷ 16 = 7.8125, which rounds to 7.81.
Student A’s SGPA after the carry-over exam is 7.81, up from 6.69, because subject 3’s contribution rose from 0 to 18 while its credits stayed at 3 throughout.

Where this formula comes from
The SGPA formula used here comes from clause 14 of the B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised), in force since session 2018-19 and still the version AKTU links as of September 2026. The original 2018-19 PDF is also still on AKTU’s ordinance page, but it is the percentage conversion clause that differs between the two documents, not the SGPA formula. For a carry-over result that needs to go on official paperwork, get it verified through your AKTU marksheet or a conversion certificate rather than a calculator result.
Carry-over, grace marks and divisions
A failed subject is graded F, worth 0 points, and it still counts its credits toward the semester total, ΣCi, in the SGPA formula. Passing it later in a carry-over exam replaces the F with the new grade you earn, which is why the calculator shows your SGPA both before and after. Some colleges cap what grade you can be awarded in a carry-over exam, so check with yours if you have been told otherwise, or see our carry-over rules guide for what the ordinance does specify. Carry-over exams are held together with the end-semester exams, not on a separate date (clause 11). Divisions are decided on CGPA, not on a single semester’s SGPA. Honours or Distinction needs CGPA 7.5 or above with no grace marks, no year gap and every subject passed in one attempt (plus 20 NPTEL or MOOC credits for Honours). First division is 6.5 up to below 7.5. Second division is 5.0 up to below 6.5 (clause 16.1). The Revised ordinance sets no number for grace marks. If your marks are close to a pass, ask your college examination cell what was applied, because AKTU does not publish a figure. Your actual carry-over grade appears on your marksheet, which you can check on AKTU Results 2026.
Questions students ask
What grade does a failed AKTU subject get?
A fail is graded F, worth 0 grade points. It is not left out of your SGPA calculation. Its credits still count in the total credits for the semester. They just contribute 0 to the points side of the formula, and that is what brings your SGPA down.
Does passing the carry-over exam erase the effect of the fail?
It replaces the F with whatever grade you score in the carry-over exam, and your SGPA for that semester can be recalculated with the new figure. It does not erase the fact that you needed a carry-over attempt, but the grade point itself is updated.
Is there a maximum grade I can get in a carry-over exam?
The ordinance text we hold does not specify a cap on the grade awarded in a carry-over exam. Some colleges apply their own limit, so check with your department if you have heard of one before assuming what grade you can be awarded.
When are AKTU carry-over exams held?
Carry-over exams are held together with the end-semester exams, not as a separate sitting, under clause 11 of the ordinance. You sit your carry-over paper alongside the regular exams for the next opportunity AKTU schedules for that subject.
Can I still get Honours or Distinction if I carried over a subject?
No. Honours or Distinction under clause 16.1 needs every subject passed in a single attempt, with no grace marks and no year gap, on top of a CGPA of 7.5 or above. A carry-over rules that out, though First or Second division are still possible depending on your CGPA.
