Division assumes no grace marks, no year gap and every subject passed on the first attempt, unless you say otherwise above.
Formula
CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) / ΣCi
Ci is the total credits of semester i. Si is the SGPA you scored in semester i. Σ means you add this up across every semester you include. ΣCi is the combined credits across all those semesters. CGPA is rounded to two decimal places, as set out in clause 14.4(d) of the ordinance. If you only have one semester’s result to enter, CGPA equals that semester’s SGPA, since there is nothing else to weight it against yet.
Worked example
Student A scored an SGPA of 8.00 in both semester 1 (22 credits) and semester 2 (24 credits).
22 × 8.00 = 176. 24 × 8.00 = 192. Add: 176 + 192 = 368. Add the credits: 22 + 24 = 46. Divide: 368 ÷ 46 = 8.00.
Student A’s CGPA is 8.00, the same as each semester’s SGPA, because the SGPA did not change between semesters.
Student B scored 7.20 in semester 1 (22 credits) and 8.60 in semester 2 (24 credits).
22 × 7.20 = 158.4. 24 × 8.60 = 206.4. Add: 158.4 + 206.4 = 364.8. Add the credits: 22 + 24 = 46. Divide: 364.8 ÷ 46 = 7.9304, which rounds to 7.93.
Student B’s CGPA is 7.93. A simple average of 7.20 and 8.60 would give 7.90. The credit-weighted formula gives a slightly different figure because semester 2 carried more credits. AKTU rounds the final CGPA to two decimal places, which is why 7.9304 becomes 7.93 rather than 7.930 or 7.9.
Grade table
The table below lists every grade AKTU awards, its point value and the marks range it covers.

What the ordinance says
B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised), clause 14. PDF (fms.aktu.ac.in), checked 18 September 2026
Where this formula comes from
This formula comes from clause 14 of the B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised), in force since session 2018-19 and still the version AKTU links as of September 2026, along with the rounding rule at clause 14.4(d). The original 2018-19 PDF is also still on AKTU’s ordinance page, but it is the percentage conversion clause that differs between the two documents, not the CGPA formula itself. If a college or employer needs a CGPA figure on official paperwork, get it verified through your AKTU marksheet or a conversion certificate rather than a calculator result.
Carry-over, grace marks and divisions
CGPA decides your final division. See the grading system page for the full division bands and what disqualifies Honours or Distinction. If a carry-over subject affects your CGPA, our carry-over rules guide explains how. The CGPA on your marksheet comes from this same formula, which you can check on AKTU Results 2026.
Questions students ask
What is CGPA in the AKTU system?
CGPA is your Cumulative Grade Point Average across every semester you have completed. AKTU works it out as CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) / ΣCi, where Ci is a semester's total credits and Si is that semester's SGPA. It updates each time a new semester's result is added, and the university rounds it to two decimal places.
Why is CGPA not just the average of my SGPAs?
Because semesters do not always carry the same number of credits. CGPA weights each semester's SGPA by its credits, so a semester with more credits has more influence on the final figure. A simple average would treat every semester equally, which is not how AKTU calculates it.
Can I calculate CGPA after just one semester?
Yes, though it will equal that semester's SGPA since there is nothing else to weight it against. CGPA becomes more meaningful once you have two or more semesters to combine, which is when the credit weighting starts to change the result.
Does this calculator show my division automatically?
No. It only returns your CGPA. Use that figure against the division bands further down this page, Honours or Distinction, First, Second, to work out where you stand, and remember AKTU checks extra conditions like grace marks and attempts separately.
Does the calculator connect to my AKTU result?
No. It only applies the CGPA formula to the SGPA and credit figures you type in. It does not fetch or verify anything from AKTU's own systems, so check your SGPA and credit entries against your actual marksheets before you rely on the result.
