Formula
SGPA = Σ(Ci × Gi) / ΣCi
Ci is the credit value of subject i, fixed by your scheme. Gi is the grade point you scored in subject i, from 0 to 10. Σ means you add this up across every subject in the semester. ΣCi is the total credits for the semester, the number on your marksheet.
Worked example
Student A takes five subjects this semester: two worth 4 credits, two worth 3 credits, and one worth 2 credits. The grades are A+, A, B+, B and A.
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Points | Credits × Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | A+ | 10 | 40 |
| 2 | 4 | A | 9 | 36 |
| 3 | 3 | B+ | 8 | 24 |
| 4 | 3 | B | 7 | 21 |
| 5 | 2 | A | 9 | 18 |
Add the last column: 40 + 36 + 24 + 21 + 18 = 139. Add the credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 16. Divide: 139 ÷ 16 = 8.6875, which rounds to 8.69.
Student A’s SGPA for the semester is 8.69. Notice that a subject’s weight in the total comes from its credits, so a 4-credit subject pulls the SGPA more than a 2-credit one, even at the same grade.
Grade table
The table below lists every grade AKTU awards, its point value and the marks range it covers. AKTU’s top grade is A+ at 10 points. Any calculator that offers A++ at 10 and A+ at 9 is using a generic Indian scale, so the SGPA it gives you will not match your marksheet.
| Grade | Points | Marks range | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 10 | 90 to 100 | Outstanding |
| A | 9 | 80 to 89 | Excellent |
| B+ | 8 | 70 to 79 | Very Good |
| B | 7 | 60 to 69 | Good |
| C | 6 | 50 to 59 | Above Average |
| D | 5 | 45 to 49 | Average |
| E | 4 | 40 to 44 | Poor |
| F | 0 | 0 to 39 | Fail |
What the ordinance says
B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised), clause 14. PDF (fms.aktu.ac.in), checked 18 September 2026
Where this formula comes from
This formula comes from clause 14 of the B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised), in force since session 2018-19 and still the version AKTU links as of September 2026. The original 2018-19 PDF also sits on AKTU’s ordinance page, but the two agree on how SGPA is worked out. It is the percentage conversion clause that differs between them, not this one. If your college or an employer wants an SGPA figure on official paperwork, get it verified through your AKTU marksheet or a conversion certificate rather than a number from a calculator.
Carry-over, grace marks and divisions
SGPA on its own does not decide your division. That comes from CGPA across all semesters, and the full division bands are on our grading system page. If you are carrying a failed subject, our carry-over rules guide covers how that affects your SGPA and your final division. The SGPA on your marksheet comes from this same formula, which you can check on AKTU Results 2026.
Questions students ask
What is SGPA in the AKTU grading system?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures how you performed in one semester only, worked out from the credits and grade points of every subject you took that semester. AKTU uses the formula SGPA = Σ(Ci × Gi) / ΣCi, where Ci is a subject's credits and Gi is the grade point you scored in it.
Does this calculator use AKTU's official formula?
Yes. It applies the SGPA formula set out in clause 14 of the B.Tech Ordinance 2018-19 (Revised). It does not access or reproduce your actual AKTU result. It simply applies the formula to the credits and grades you enter.
What if I fail a subject?
A failed subject is graded F, worth 0 points, and its credits still count in the SGPA total. This pulls your SGPA down even though you scored zero for that subject. Once you clear it in a carry-over exam, your SGPA for that semester can be recalculated with the new grade.
How is SGPA different from CGPA?
SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers every semester you have completed so far, weighted by the credits in each one. Your CGPA changes each time a new semester's SGPA is added, while a past semester's SGPA stays fixed once results are declared.
Why does the grade table stop a pass at 40 percent?
AKTU's grade table awards E (4 points) for 40 to 44 percent and F (0 points, a fail) below 40 percent. This threshold comes directly from clause 14 of the Revised ordinance, the same clause that fixes every other grade boundary on this page.
Is the 2018-19 ordinance still current in 2026?
Yes. 2018-19 is the session the ordinance took effect, not its last update. The Revised version is still the one AKTU links from its own ordinance page, filed under the 2021-22 syllabus tree, and its percentage rule was confirmed by AKTU's X account in August 2023. This page shows the date we last checked it.
